State-owned oil firms gave a considerable relief to inflation-hit consumers by cutting the prices of petrol and LPG by Rs 3 per litre and Rs 54 per non-subsidised cylinder, respectively.
In Delhi, Petrol now costs Rs 63.09 per litre, Rs 3 down from previous rate of Rs 66.09 per litre. The rates will differ from state to state as different state governments levy different sales tax or VAT on the fuel.
In Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, petrol prices slipped to Rs 69.73 per litre, Rs 70.35 per litre and Rs 65.90 per litre, respectively.
The latest price hack, announced on Tuesday, was the fourth reduction in the price of the fuel since March as well as the biggest in nearly five years. The oil marketing companies have been cutting prices as international prices of crude oil are on the decline.
On April 16, petrol price was slashed by Rs 1.20 a litre; while on March 16 the fuel was made cheaper by Rs 2.40 a litre. In the following fortnight, the fuel became cheaper by Re 1 a litre.
The price of a 14.2 kg non-subsidised LPG cylinder has also been reduced from Rs 901 to Rs 847. Like petrol prices, rates of LPG will also vary in different cities, depending on local sales tax or VAT.
